Valerie Pickens “50by50"
Shortly after my 49th birthday I had this idea to lose 50 lbs before my 50th birthday. In my mind that would give me an entire year to meet my goal. Four months later I finally stopped thinking about it and started to take action. I was planning to have a huge 50th birthday celebration and I refused to look the way I did in previous photos. I stopped by WOW Fitness on my way home from work and told Kameelah about my plans to lose weight and that I needed some help. She looked at me and said that’s no problem. Thinking aloud I said “That’s a lot easier said than done. I have not been doing any serious exercising in years. A brisk walk on breaks at work was about it.” She just laughed and proceeded to get me started on a meal and exercise plan that included a lifestyle diet, Zumba and circuit training, accountability tools such as regular weigh ins and measurements, as well as personal phone calls to keep me on track. I started my journey reminding myself that “I can lose 50 by 50”, thus earning the nickname of ’50 by 50”.
My first day of circuit training was rough. I thought I had lost my mind and was going to die. The truth is I was just that out of shape, but I was determined to keep going. For the first few months I could only do 30 minutes of circuit training at a time, but kept coming three to four days a week. During this time I experienced soreness, aches and pains and days that I did not want to go to the gym at all. Sometimes I would sit in the parking lot of the gym and try to figure out if I wanted to go work out or turn around and go home. I continued to press forward with my weight loss journey and took it one day at a time. Eventually I was able to work my way up to exercising an hour or more on most days. My determination grew as I was able to conquer different challenges that were presented to me. The biggest motivator for me was the gym’s weight loss competition, WOW the Runway. The competition helped me to stay focused on my fitness goals during the summer months, and I was declared the winner of this competition! By this time I was half way to my goal – I had lost 27 pounds and over 13 inches.
I have come a long way from just thinking about losing weight. I met my goal – 50 by 50! In addition, I lost over 21 inches and dropped three dress sizes. I also was able to get off one of my medications for Type 2 diabetes. I never thought any of this was possible over a year ago. Now I am working to lose another 25 pounds. With the tools and support of the WOW staff and my WOW family, I feel confident that I can reach this goal as well. I truly believe that there is nowhere in Little Rock where you will get the one on one attention, support and personal training like I received at WOW Fitness!

I have been working out with WOW Fitness since September 3, 2009. Within the first week I thought that I was going to die. Not because the work out was so hard but because my body was not used to exercising on a regular basis. I had to train myself all over again on how to breathe. My biggest problem originally was the fact that I wasn’t going to let anybody tell me I had to give up SWEETS or SNACKS. Once I made my mind up that I would rather be healthier than full of chocolaty goodies it was smooth sailing form there.
Since September I have gone from a size 22/24 to a 14/16 in dresses. I’ve lost a total of 30 pounds and counting! I can even pull my boots all the way up my calf leg. (Now that’s a miracle, I thought I’d never be able to do that) I’ve lost 9 inches off of my waist line and I can see my belly button now…lol. I cannot tell you that if you join WOW Fitness it will change your life. But I can tell you that it changed mine because I was ready to be CHANGED.
